Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare depression/anxiety, the behavior pattern of the divorced family adolescent with those of parents family adolescents and to identify the correlation between depression/anxiety and social competence, behavior problems. Method: Data was collected from 41 divorced group and 80 parents group in two middle schools in 2001. Result: The average score of depression, state & trait anxiety of the divorced group was significantly higher than parents group(p=.000). The social competence score of divorced group was higher than parents group, but not significant. The behavior problem score of divorced family group was significantly higher than parent group(p<0.05). The internalizing and externalizing and total behavior problems score of divorced group were significantly higher than parent group(p<0.01). Only social score was negatively correlated with depression(r--.365, p=<0.05). The school performance and total social competence score were not correlated with depression. Except aggressive behavior score, the rest problem behavior scores were positively correlated with depression. And internalizing and externalizing score were positively correlated with depression. Trait anxiety positively correlated with behavior problems and strongly have positive correlation with internalizing, externalizing and total behavior problems. State anxiety was not correlated with behavior problems(.020, p<0.01). Conclusion: Divorced family adolescents have emotion which is likely to provoke psychiatric problems, comparing with parents group.
